Enhancing alumni engagement in DC

In January, the Office of Governmental Relations (OGR) partnered with the University of Illinois Alumni Association to establish a “Hill Alumni Advisory Group” to provide U of I alumni working on Capitol Hill with a direct link to the University of Illinois and UI Alumni Association. Our overarching objective is to engage members of this group on federal advocacy initiatives, legislative events and activities in Washington. It is intended to provide an additional channel for alumni Hill staff to interact more closely with their Alma Mater.

We have held three different events with the Hill Alumni Advisory Group. The first was a kickoff meeting in January to inform interested graduates about the mission of the group. In March, we hosted a dinner where Univerity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Chancellor Robert Jones and Vice Chancellor for Research Peter Schiffer shared updates on both the campus and its research portfolio. Most recently, we held a reception to introduce the group to Paul Weinberger, our new director of federal relations.

OGR and UI Alumni Association have also created a separate advisory group consisting of alumni representing corporations and lobbying firms, with similar goals.
